An artist’s studio is of the same taxonomic rank as a laboratory, a voting booth and a cinema. They are all members of the temple domain, being places where unreasonable intentions are made manifest. Infusing the studio is a gas, which is termed culture. Furthermore, each studio features its own specific brand of culture, which is toxic to anyone not exposed to its effects since birth.

The first day we landed we saw the Skeleton of a human being laying in this manner under a shade that was just big enough to cover it, and some days after that, when some of the Gentlemen went with a design to examine it more narrowly, it was gone.

Bereft (series)

Wandering exhausted and alone through the desert, the exile climbed to the top of a rocky outcrop and looked out over the flat and rocky terrain. With the last of his strength he built a cairn, strong enough to support his weight. His task finished, he mounted his construction and looked out upon the empty terrain. Drawing himself up as tall as he could manage, he took a deep breath and loudly proclaimed his non-existence.
